English majors today may not recall a single poem by Timothy Dwight, Elihu Hubbard Smith, or John G.C. Brainard, but there it is: Connecticut set foot in literary history as early as , introduced by the members of what sounds like a drinking club. The next notable publications in Connecticut were written by African-Americans. A number of poets, including John Greenleaf Whittier, wrote poems in his memory. A posthumous The literary remains of J.G.C. Brainard: with a sketch of his life was published in , and revised and republished as The poems of John G. C. Brainard. A new and authentic collection. A number of his poems are reprinted in collections of poems.

Born in Salem, Arkansas and raised in Tulsa, artist, poet, and theater set designer Joe Brainard moved to New York City at age There, he joined the community of New York School poets and painters who would later become his artistic collaborators, including Frank O’Hara, Ted Berrigan, John Ashbery, and Ron Padgett. One of Brainard’s most frequent collaborators was his longtime partner. John Gardiner Calkins Brainard (–) was an American lawyer, editor and poet. John Brainard was born in New London, Connecticut in October , son of Jeremiah G. Brainard, formerly a judge of the Connecticut Superior Court.
